The CCSC Finance Committee has released its decisions for Fall 2011 CCSC allocations. This article will provide the details.
FALL 2011 ALLOCATIONS
Presented by the CCSC Finance Committee:
Kevin Zhai, Chair (non-voting)
Steele Sternberg
Theo Buchsbaum
Sarah Chai
Elizabeth Angeles
Daphne Chen
Loxley Bennett
Campus Life Committee
Amount requested: $14,460
Amount allocated: $15,000, by 6-0-0 vote.
Majority opinion: The Funding Committee unanimously voted to allocate $15,000 to CLC under the provision that, when funds are spent on the two unspecified events in their allocation request, those EAFs are reviewed by the entire Funding Committee as opposed to just the VP of Funding. This will ensure that the $4,000 dollars that were requested for these unspecified events are spent in an appropriate and responsible manner. In addition, the Committee admired CLC’s attempt to cut their costs from last semester and encourages them to use some of the $4,000 allocated to the unspecified events to support established events such as Homecoming and the Tree Lighting Ceremony if costs cannot be cut as effectively as CLC intends to. Finally, the Committee added $540 to the requested CLC allocation so as to offset the as-of-yet unknown, but estimated costs of the 9/11 Memorial Event which CCSC sponsored in collaboration with the other three undergraduate councils.
Class of 2012 Council
Amount requested: $12,196
Amount allocated: $12,196, by 3-0-1 vote.
Majority opinion: The Funding Committee voted to give the Class of 2012 Council their full request, with the understanding that $270 of the $5870 Lerner Pub allocation will be added to the projected cost of the Class Dinner to increase the number of students who can attend. Based on the cost of the first Lerner Pub, the total cost of the four events should be $5600, thus accounting for the $270 difference.
Class of 2013 Council
Amount requested: $2,812
Amount allocated: $2,812, by 3-0-1 vote.
Majority Opinion: The Funding Committee had no objections to any of the budget breakdowns. The only reservations were regarding whether or not pinnies will be cute, but the Committee realizes that pinnie cuteness is not under its purview.
Class of 2014 Class Council
Amount requested: $5,350
Amount allocated: $3,250, by 4-1-1 vote.
Majority Opinion: The allocated budget of $3,250 was agreed upon by (1) eliminating the $2,500 requested for class shirts because the application mistakenly requested a subsidy when it only intended to ask for a loan, and (2) giving the council $400 more for NYC event tickets, keeping in mind that any ticket that could be used to attract participants (such as those for Broadway shows) would probably cost more than $40 each.
Dissenting Opinion: The issue here came from the fact that neither the 2014 Class Council nor the Funding Committee took the appropriate time to investigate the realistic costs for some of the proposed events. The class speaker night at Faculty House is a great event, but lacked the proper funding research in terms of how much money would be needed to reserve a speaker to justify its costs. The increase of $250 for the Class of 2014 Council from last year without the research to back it up in combination with the Committee’s hastiness to vote on the allocation are chief reasons for dissent.
Class of 2015 Council
Amount requested: $1,406
Amount allocated: $1,406, by 2-0-1 vote.
Majority opinion: The Funding Committee voted to give the Class of 2014 Council their full request, with the recommendation that printing funds be directed to larger publicity initiatives. (Instead, printing can be done either on Columbia Ninja printers, or in the SGO Office—which has color printing.)
