We had a very eventful CCSC meeting on Sunday October 9th in Lerner’s Satow Room. Among the topics discussed were funding for Bachanaal, a resolution in support of enforcing the University’s current Smoking policy, and Homecoming Week! Just a reminder that all CCSC general board and committee meetings are open to the public, so check out the Meeting Schedules tab on the website and hope to see you soon. Here is everything you should know from the meeting:
In the executive board updates, VP Policy Ryan Cho provided updates on the different policy issues being tackled, and mentioned that meetings with Dean Yatrakis of Academic Affairs and the University Chaplain’s office would be held this week. VP Funding Kevin Zhai announced that funding committee meetings would now stretch from 5-7pm on Sundays, with the first hour being used for the Joint Council Co-Sponsorship Committeee and the second hour for CCSC-specific funding projects. VP Campus Life Jasmine Senior ran down the list of homecoming events, which you can see on our homepage.
In my Communications update for the week, I announced that members of the Communications committee will begin reaching out to Student Groups to speak at their board meetings in order to fill them in on CCSC’s goals for the year and solicit feedback on issues that they would like us to tackle. If your group would like to meet with us, let me know at vkg2107@columbia.edu. In addition, there will be a Student Group Leadership Summit planned with ESC for later this semester.
After confirming the appointment of first-year Ryan Bae to the CCSC Elections Board, discussion shifted to funding and co-sponsorships. The council decided to table the issue of Delta Gamma’s funding request, after the sorority was forced to shift locations for their fashion show from Roone Arledge to Havana Central because of an error on the part of University Event Management. Council members agreed to look into the mistake and whether Lerner Hall will compensate DG.
The main topic of the night was the$18,000 debt that Bachanaal incurred, after having their spring concert moved from Low Plaza to the lawns only about a week before the event. Dan Weinstein, the President of Bachanaal, presented the budget deficit facing the club and requested that CCSC cover the cost in order for the group to effectively plan their concert for this year, without sacrificing the caliber of talent they can afford. The council decided to form a joint investigative committee to investigate the issue and will discuss the matter further at next week’s meeting.
Rounding out the meeting was a resolution put forward by VP Policy Ryan Cho to increase information about the University’s current Smoking Policy. The resolution suggests that the University wait two years to increase enforcement and study the effects. The council passed Cho’s resolution with overwhelming support.
Please tune in for new CCSC updates and upcoming events. Our next meeting is on October 16th at 8pm. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us at ccsc@columbia.edu, or use the ‘Talk to CCSC’ feature in the top left corner of this website.
