The CCSC Communications Committee held our first WTF event on Tuesday night in John Jay Dining Hall.  The What To Fix initiative was created with the hope of connecting more directly with students and soliciting feedback about issues that the council at large can tackle.  We set up shop inside the dining hall and students came by to express their opinions about life at Columbia.

We received some great comments from students.  There were multiple requests for John Jay to open earlier on the weekdays, so that students can eat before leaving for class.  In addition, some students wanted one centralized place online where they could find all the Columbia websites they use on a daily basis.  A couple passers-by asked about the allocation of their student life fees, and some more expressed grievances about the furniture in residence halls.

My favorite comment of the night came from a first-year, who said “Can you fix the fact that Columbia girls are too smart… my game just doesn’t work here.”  Unfortunately, I don’t think that was on the agenda for this year, but we’ll do what we can to maintain an environment that is conducive  to “making moves”

Anyways, this was a really great way to meet students and talk to them about issues that we all think about and deal with on a daily basis.  We will now be compiling information from the responses and communicating with the policy committee to figure out next steps.

Thanks to all the members of the Communications Committee for their help with the first WTF session, and a special shout out to Matthew Chou, Katie Angulo, and Rohan Jotwani who were truly dedicated to making sure the event was successful.

If you want the next WTF night to be held in your residence hall, let us know at ccsc@columbia.edu, or leave it in the comments.
