[ALMA MATTERS ♔] 12.3.11
You’re almost there…
The end of the semester is nearing, and with it comes a brisk chill in the air, lights in the trees, and a plenitude of events and opportunities on campus. Oh, and finals.
Regardless if you’re a senior who’s on the verge of being academically checked-out or a first-year asking why you decided to take a 3000-level class without the prereqs, it’s a tough time for everyone. But take a deep breath, and remember a few things:
1) You are worth more than a grade.
2) Sleep is actually your friend.
3) Despite 2), a Starbucks Gold Card is pretty much the college student’s version of an Amex Centurion. Pro status.
Also, in case you didn’t see the dozens of reposts, there was a really fantastic article written by CCSC’s very own Director of Technology/Website Guru Wilfred Chan that I think a lot of students would benefit from reading. Take a read if you have a chance, and while you’re at it, check out the Student Wellness Project. They’re doing some exciting work, but need a lot of help. The more students that get involved, the stronger our community can become.

“Looking Back to Move forward: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights” will feature a short presentation to be given discussing Human Rights and their greatest achievement: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The declaration is celebrating its 63rd anniversary, and as a group we feel it is very relevant that we spark attention to this worthy moment in history amongst the student body. Following the presentation, the group will hear from brief speeches by J. Paul Martin, co-founder of the Center for the Study of Human Rights, and Jasmine Ergas, Associate Director for the Institute for the Study of Human Rights and will then engage in a quick dialogue as to what they learned about their rights as human beings that they were not aware of previously and will participate in a short discussion, portraying why they feel universal implementation has yet to occur.

5. International Human Rights Day + Climate Change | 12/10, 11:30am | Schermerhorn 603
Road to Rio
Come connect with New York City Teens who will be attending Rio+20 to fight for human rights and combat climate change.
International Human Rights Day is Saturday, December 10, 2011.
Climate Change is one of the environmental concerns least discussed in the human rights arena. It is a problem that is wreaking havoc on our world’s population and affecting people around the world.
Please join the Master of Public Administration Environmental Science and Policy program in hosting local high school students from the Human Rights Activist Project at Global Kids. This event is an active, engaging way for the Columbia University community to connect with local youth and to inspire the next generation of leaders on climate change.
Columbia students will have the opportunity to engage with these young people and hear from members of the International Research Institute for Climate and Society about the global impact of climate change as the youth prepare to attend Rio+20, the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, in June.
We hope you take a break from studying to celebrate International Human Rights Day with an active and engaging event for both the Columbia community and the Global Kids delegates. Food will be provided.
Date: Saturday, December 10, 2011 from 11:30am – 3pm
Location: Schermerhorn 603

Presented in partnership with: MPA Environmental Science and Policy Program, School of Social Work Intro to Community Organizing Class, International Research Institute for Climate and Society, SIPA Human Rights Working Group, SIPA Food Group, Green Umbrella
6. SantaCon | 12/10, 12pm | Meet on Low Steps
If you think dressing up for Halloween is fun, then imagine partying with thousands of Santas and other holiday characters while eating, drinking, playing, and singing as we travel en masse throughout Manhattan! (11,000+ expected to participate this year)
Santacon is a non-denominational, non-commercial, non-political and non-sensical Santa Claus convention that occurs once a year for absolutely no reason other than an excuse to celebrate the season.
ALL 20 SCHOOLS affiliated with Columbia University have been cordially invited to participate in the Santarchy and everyone is encouraged to bring guests and friends! Our rally point will be the steps of Low Library where we will get our own holly jollies in before its time to disperse and make for the main mob of 11,000 Santas downtown!
Santa suits will be sold Dec. 5th on lerner ramp for $15 (hats too of course). 11am-1pm
REMEMBER, it is important to stay warm and toasty, so don you now your gay apparel and get some naughtiness out of your system to kick off reading week!
A GENERAL SANTACON GUIDE
What to expect
Santacon is an annual convention for Santa and his holiday brethren. Expect holiday cheer, unconventional gifts, naughty carols and general hilarity. Do not expect to be entertained: Santa IS the entertainment!
How to be Santa
- GSSC will be selling a limited number of Santa Suits and Santa hats during the week before SantaCon with all proceeds going to Community Impact. Check back on the FB page for dates times and locations.
- Make a costume. You can be an elf, a holiday ninja, a Santasaurus, a Hannukah Harry or a Santa Palin. Use your imagination! Just try not to wear your jeans.
-If you’d like to, bring gifts! A gift can be a reindeer game, a song, a dance or a joke to entertain Santa and tourists alike.

9. CU Science Journal Submissions Deadline | 12/15
The Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal (CUSJ) is now accepting submission for its annual publication. Submissions should be emailed to ceo.cuj@gmail.com by Thursday, December 15.
As you may know, the CUSJ publishes original undergraduate research articles in any discipline of science or engineering (for example, the paper you might write as part of the SURF/AMGEN summer program or the W3500 Research Class) in its annual publication. The CUSJ also hosts events which bring the spirit of scientific research to Columbia; last fall, the Editor-in-Chief of Cell gave a talk about the professional review process behind the scenes. In the spring semester, CUSJ hosts its annual Symposium which brings together student presenters and professors from New York and nearby states in a large event focused on sharing research and knowledge.

12. Columbia Literacy Advocacy Project Volunteer Opportunity
Did you know a third of all detained youth read below the fourth grade level? Would you like to teach and mentor teens in the Juvenile Justice System?
The Columbia Literacy Advocacy Project (CLAP) is a new initiative that helps youth in detention who are below grade level in reading and math. Research has proven that routine tutoring sessions, in addition to standard schooling, can have a significant impact on the academic performance of this overlooked, under-served group.
We are looking for Columbia students to mentor and tutor detained youth at the Horizon and Crossroads Juvenile Centers. Tutors will lead dynamic and engaging study sessions to help their students perform better on NY State Regents exams. We are looking for tutors in the sciences, maths, English, history, and foreign languages. Tutoring sessions take place from 3-5pm. We are also looking for students interested in taking on leadership positions with CLAP!
If you are interested in volunteering with us one or more days a week next semester, please complete the attached application and send it to columbiaclap@gmail.com.
